Dennis Ray Hicks, Sr known as Dad grew up in Biloxi Mississippi married to Etta Delitha Hicks since 1960. Dad retired after 35 years of being a Foreman Construction worker. Although he wasn't much of a cook, it has always been a dream of his to one day own a barbecue restaurant. It was in Virginia at a family reunion where Dad begun his vision to establish a restaurant. His eldest daughter gave him the name DAD'S, and from there DAD'S Barbecue was created. His son in Law created his famous logo, his niece prepared aprons and hats, his second eldest daughter became an investor and business partner, while his wife Etta helped prepare the cooks famous recipes which we are in love with today.
DAD'S Barbecue opened it's first location at 10151 foothill blvd in Oakland, Ca. on September 1st 1999. He worked a month and a half along side his wife, soon after his first head cook Carl Chatman came along and worked side by side with him for six years. One year after opening Dad was able to buy the first largest barbecue catering truck in the bay area. this created opportunities to cater to the Oakland School District, Fremont High School, Nextel Telephone Company, San Quentin Prison and one of his favorite teams NFL S.F 49er's. His vision has become a reality. DAD'S main vision was to able to help young men who have been incarcerated by offering them a second opportunity at life and a career. Dad's heart is bigger than his company. This is why him and his food is loved so much.
